Semen Analysis (Collection) Instructions

Bluegrass Fertility Center - Lexington, KY Semen Analysis

  1. We ask that you abstain for 2-5 days before a semen collection. You may arrange for the collection to take place at home or at the office. You may choose the location that is most convenient for you. Semen analysis and sperm cryopreservation are by appointment only.
  2. Wash and rinse hands and genital area. Dry thoroughly with a clean towel.
  3. Collect the semen specimen in the sterile collection cup. Semen volume ranges from 1 to 6ml.
  4. Replace the lid on the sterile collection cup.
  5. Make sure the collection cup is labeled with your name, your wife’s name, your social security number, date, and time of collection.
  6. Make sure you fill out the information on the worksheet provided by the lab that has the asterisk by them. This information is essential in correct identification matching between worksheet and specimen. It also assures the proper days of abstinence and that the time of ejaculate and arrival in the laboratory is no more than one hour. If you are collecting at home and have not been given a worksheet please fill out the same information a sheet of paper that is on the specimen container along with 1) the days of abstinence 2) time of ejaculate 3) method by which the sample was obtained, and 4) whether any of the sample was lost. If you have any questions as to how to fill out the sheet please ask rather than leave something blank.
  7. If collecting at home please have the semen specimen in the lab within one hour’s time.
  8. If collecting at home for a semen analysis and a portion of the sample was lost please call to reschedule. If collecting onsite please mark on worksheet and estimate the amount. Please do not leave without consulting the lab personnel as to whether a recollect is needed. A partial semen specimen can result in erroneous results.

* Bluegrass Fertility Center does not participate with all insurance companies. You must pay in full at the time of service. If you have infertility coverage that includes a semen analysis or sperm wash for insemination you may choose to go to a facility that accepts your insurance. If you have any questions concerning this please contact the office and ask for the business department. If you do not provide the office with your insurance information at least 24 business hours prior to your appt. you will be responsible for payment, before services are rendered.
