IVF Frequently Asked Questions
Does my husband need ton come to all my appointments?
It is only required for your husband to be present at the time of the egg retrieval so he can deliver a sperm specimen and drive you home. We recommend that your husband be present at the initial consultation and teaching session so he may have any questions answered and learn how to give your injections.
Can my husband collect his sperm at home?
Yes, but it must be brought to our lab no longer than an hour after ejaculation. The specimen must be kept at body temperature. You will need a sterile specimen cup provided by our office.
What if my husband or I get sick during an IVF cycle?
Please call our office for instructions. Most colds or upper repiratory infections will not be a problem. Most over the counter medications and antibiotics are safe to use with the fertility drugs, but check with us first.
What if I have a question about my medication after office hours?
You may call your Specialty Pharmacy. Staff is available 24 hours a day to help you with your medication questions. If you need refills on your medication, please give them a call.
Why do I get a red reaction at the injection site?
Some of the medications (especially the HCG injection) may cause a local skin reaction. The area will become red and inflamed and will feel warm to the touch. You may try a topical Cortisone cream. This does not affect your IVF cycle and usually will go away in 1-2 days.
What are the most common side effects of fertility medications?
Some of the most common side effects are feeling bloated, hot flashes and feeling emotional. There may be localized skin reaction at the injection site. Hot, wet compresses will help with the discomfort.
What do I do with all of my dirty needles and syringes?
All dirty needles and syringes must be disposed of in a sharps container. One will be ordered with your medications. When the container is full, please close it securely and you may return it to our office for disposal.
What is the average number of embryos transferred?
The doctor will make the decision after discussing this with you. Generally, two or three embryos will be transferred, but the number may vary slightly depending on the quality of the embryos and the age of the female partner.
Why do I need to wait 14 days before taking a pregnancy test?
You have been given an injection of the pregnancy hormone HCG (Novarel). It normally takes 14 days for the medication to be out of you system . It may result in a false reading if taken earlier than 14 days.
Why must I get a blood pregnancy test after an IVF cycle?
We must show documentation that a blood test was performed to verify pregnancy status. Many patients will often have implantational bleeding and assume they are not pregnant when in fact they are. If you obtain your blood test at a different facility, you will need an order from your physician. If blood work is obtained at the Central Baptist facility, we will have the results in two to three hours.
If I don’t get pregnant after my first attempt, when can I try again?
You may try again after your next spontaneous menstrual cycle. You will need to take birth control pills for at least 21 days prior to starting injectable medications. If you have frozen embryos, your physician will review the procedure and medication protocol with you.
